Many car accidents are just insurance scams that consumers end up paying for through higher premiums.

Are you as an American consumer aware of car accident scams and frauds?  Are you aware that there are car consumer helpline in California and other states?

Here are the other tips in case you are in a car accident:

1.  If possible then try to get photos of both vehicles at the point of collision before they are moved.

2.Take photos of the other vehicles involved including the damaged and undamaged areas of the car.If the car seat is damaged then take a photo of that.Do the same for your car.

3. If the other parties are injured then try to get a photo of them.

4. If the other vehicle has prior body damages then ask the other driver to point this out to you.  Take detailed notes of this.

5. Call the police if anyone is injured even if there is a complaint of neck
discomfort. If the other party is irate or arguing liability with you then call the police so they can make an accident report for you.

6. List the names of the street.  Draw a diagram of the accident and place all vehicles involved in the picture. This should be done while it is fresh in your mind.

7. Remain calm and attend to your needs. Remember accidents do happen.

You should keep a note pad, pen and disposable camera in your car.  Please make sure that you replace the camera when the expiration date arrives and keep it out of the sun and extreme heat.  You want to make sure that you take clear pictures.   This will keep everyone honest.

As a consumer advocate for car issues, I recommend you keep a copy of this two-part post in your car for reference so you can list the information next to each of my points.

If you have any other tips then please share them with me and I will pass them on to everyone else.

There are more auto collisions on the road during the winter season. As a car consumer helpline official, I want to make sure that all of you protect your rights in case you are involved in a car accident. The last thing that you want is for a dishonest person to take advantage of you.
